Fluffy Buttermilk Biscuits

Want some fresh and delicious home-made biscuits? Look no further!

I have made this recipe many times and can confidently say that it is SO good!

Canned biscuits are good, don't get me wrong, but I am striving to be more self-sufficient, and biscuits are a good place to start! These home-made from scratch biscuits have that mouth-watering fluff and buttermilk flavor that anyone will love. This recipe is one that I have saved and written in my special recipe box and is what my family prefers when we want breakfast for any meal!

Fluffy Buttermilk Biscuits

Ingredients

Yield: ~10 biscuits

  • 3 cups of All Purpose Flour

  • 5 tsp of baking powder

  • 1/2 tsp baking soda

  • 1 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1/2 cup vegetable shortening or cold butter

  • 1 1/4 cup of buttermilk*

  • **optional melted butter for brushed tops**

Making the Biscuits

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F & line baking sheet with parchment paper

  2. Sift dry ingredients together into bowl

  3. Drop tablespoon-sized bits of lard into the dry mixture or if using butter, cut into cubes. Mix in with your hands until its crumbly. (like in the pic below instructions)

  4. mix in 1 cup of buttermilk, I use a rubber spatula until mostly combined. The dough should be slightly sticky, you can add more buttermilk if needed*

  5. Roll or pat out dough until it is 3/4 inch thick, use a cookie cutter, biscuit cutter, a cup, jar, something round the size you want your biscuits and make "O"

  6. Place biscuits 2 inches apart on the pan (optional, brush tops with melted butter before cooking)

  7. Place in over and bake for 13-15 minutes, brush tops with butter afterwards, *optional*

If you want to make this recipe in advance, you do all the same steps except for baking, just place your baking tray in the freezer until the biscuits are frozen, place frozen biscuit dough in a freezer bag until ready to use. I made some in advance and froze them, I have not yet tried to cook them from frozen. I will update this recipe with cook temp and time (from frozen) once I do that in a few days.

I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as we do!!
