Here Chicky Chicky!

I've wanted chickens for forever!!! When we lived in the city, it just did not feel like the right time. Now here we are 4 years later, and we finally did it!!

My main concerns with having chickens are, can we eat all the eggs? probably not. Will the chickens get sick and die? maybe... However, I am egg-cited to go on this chicken adventure. We ordered our chickens in December and they were born and delivered in February, now we are coming up on the 8 week mark and it is time for them to go outside!

Here is a cute little picture of them when they were only 2 days old, straight from the post office.

We had ordered 6 and they sent us 8, how lucky is that...let's just hope that there are not any roosters lol.

This is them when they started getting some feathers in, and we had to makeshift a janky top for our brooder, so they did not fly out. (They were about 4 weeks old in this pic.)

Now let me tell you, I am ready for them to get into their coop, cause my basement smells like a barnyard. Honestly, the smell isn't too bad as long as you make sure to keep the brooder clean. The best part is, you can use their old bedding in a compost pile and eventually cycle it into your garden for the next year, or when your plants are well developed (as mulch) and it is great fertilizer.

Today we spent the day outside, and the coop is waiting on siding, so they had to hang out in the good ole dog kennel :D

A day in the life of our chickens in the brooder consists of watering and feeding them twice a day, sometimes we have to refresh their water 3 or 4 times a day depending how dirty it gets. You can upgrade to the larger size feeders, but we are currently still using the chick feeder and waterers for the extra space in the brooder. Overall having chickens has been easy so far, I am a little nervous to upgrade them to the coop because I am sure that will come with it's own challenges. But you guys are here to learn along with me! If you have any coop tips or tricks let me know , I am all ears and here to learn! What kind of feed do you use for your chickens? I need some good mixes, cause ya know this is all new to me! Leave a comment with your favorite chicken feeds!
